The State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine has warned of increased activity of the hacker group UAC-0184, which is trying to gain access to military computers.

The State Service for Special Communications refers to information from the government’s Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine, CERT-UA.

«Attackers use popular messengers, social networks, and other platforms for dating and communication to spread malware», — the report says.

The purpose of such actions is to steal documents and messenger data.

Hackers send bait messages to messengers:

  • for example, to initiate enforcement proceedings / criminal proceedings;
  • video of combat operations;
  • a request for acquaintance;
  • files (archives) with a request for assistance in opening/processing them.

It is noted that the attackers use such malware, including to steal and download data from a computer, including messages and contact details of the Signal messenger, which is quite popular among the military.

Cyber experts have warned that attackers will continue to improve the ways in which malware is delivered via messengers.

«Any reckless online activity of a serviceman (for example, publishing a photo in uniform) makes it easier for attackers to prioritize targets for attacks», — the military warned.

Earlier, the same hacker group UAC-0184 sent out AFU soldiers received malware messages under the guise of recruitment to the 3rd Brigade and the IDF.
