NVIDIA sells RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 like hot cakes — literally

Published by Vadym Karpus

Demand for the latest Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 graphics cards is so high that they are almost impossible to find at recommended prices. However, Nvidia seems to have a solution. At least for attendees of its GPU Technology Conference. The scarce models can be bought right on the spot.

Nvidia is offering a limited number of premium GeForce RTX 5080 and flagship GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards at the recommended prices of $999 and $1999, respectively. They can be purchased at the Nvidia Gear Van mobile store located in GTC Park. The sale will take place on Thursday and Friday from 7:00 to 12:00 (local time), and you can pick up your purchase the same day at the main entrance to the South Hall.

However, there are a few restrictions. Only holders of conference tickets ($1145 for one day or $2295 for five days) or event passes can buy video cards, and no more than one card per person. In addition, Nvidia will offer only 2000 devices in total: 1000 GeForce RTX 5080 and 1000 GeForce RTX 5090. Finally, the sales themselves will be held in the «flash sales» format, meaning that the cards will be available spontaneously. For example, a message may appear: «90 GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards on sale for the next 30 minutes».

Prioritizing the production of GPUs for data centers instead of client graphics cards has both advantages and disadvantages for Nvidia. On the one hand, the company can sell more ultra-expensive B100/B200 devices for AI at a price of about $50 thousand per unit. On the other hand, this leaves enthusiasts (who create a positive brand image) and software developers (who work on new technologies that will subsequently stimulate demand for Nvidia products) without enough graphics cards. The sale of 2000 powerful GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards at GTC partially solves this problem by putting them in the hands of developers. However, for a huge audience, 2000 video cards are a drop in the bucket. And this attraction of unprecedented generosity is aimed at conference attendees – developers. Ordinary gamers will be left behind «flash sales».

Of course, large companies with serious budgets are expecting Nvidia DGX Station with GB300 Blackwell Ultra processor or compact DGX Spark system based on GB10. However, most developers will use more affordable solutions, such as GeForce RTX 50-series desktop graphics cards.
