Baldur’s Gate 3 is preparing a major update — 12 new subclasses, crossplay and mod support

Published by Margarita Yuzyak

Larian Studios continues to improve Baldur’s Gate 3, and the eighth major update will be one of the largest.

Players are promised 12 new subclasses, full cross play, Xbox Series S co-op, and the long-awaited photo mode. With the update, each subclass will receive unique abilities, new dialogues, and nuances in the scenario that will affect the development of the plot, such as was announced last year

So, each class will have one more unique subclass, which will open up even more opportunities for character customization. That is, the subclass updates are not just cosmetic improvements, but the patch offers even more ways to customize your group. Here is the full list of characters:

  • Bard — College of Glamor
  • Barbarian — Path of Giants
  • Priest — Death Domain
  • Druid — Circle of Stars
  • Paladin — Oath of the Crown
  • Warrior — Arcane Archer
  • Monk — Drunken Master
  • Pathfinder — Swarmkeeper
  • Rogue — Swashbuckler
  • Wizard — Shadow Magic
  • Warlock — Hexblade
  • Wizard — Bladesinging

Along with subclasses, fans of multiplayer games will get full-fledged cross play. So you can gather your friends for adventures, whether they’re on Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or another platform. Search for other players’ lobbies through the Larian network and jump into a game without boundaries. And finally, split-screen co-op is coming to Xbox Series S — something the community has been waiting for.

In addition, Larian Studios is bringing a full photo mode, so you can create real masterpieces. The camera can be freely rotated, tilted, and zoomed to find the perfect angle. You can use filters, blur, lighting, color gradation, frames, and stickers to create your own unique photos. And the best part is that your characters will pose and express emotions. You can turn on the mode even during combat, dialogs, or cutscenes.

The developers also promise support for mods via the Steamworks platform. Before Patch 8, Baldur’s Gate 3 players used third-party platforms such as Nexus Mods. They allowed creating and sharing mods, but the process was less convenient and could cause compatibility issues after game updates. Although, enthusiasts have already coped with the most difficult task — support for mods on the cloud. But in general, the process should now become more convenient and simpler.

In the update, we can expect balance adjustments to the battles to make them even sharper and the multiplayer game more stable. The big update is scheduled for 2025, but the developers are already actively testing cross play features and preparing the ground for big changes.

In parallel, Larian Studios is also working on two new role-playing projects outside the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Although thanks to Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios’ revenue grew almost 20 times the company does not want to stop with this game. With this large-scale update, the studio continues to support the game, but Hasbro, the owner of the D&D franchise, is negotiating the fourth installment of the Baldur’s Gate series and developing another game in the D&D universe.
