Motorola Edge 50 Pro review: compact beauty on Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 with 125W fast charging

Published by Pavlo Chuikin

Motorola has released a new smartphone Edge 50 Pro. The device can’t be classified as a mid-range and it’s not a flagship in terms of price, but it’s very close. The stuffing here is serious, as are our impressions of the device. The stylish and ergonomic body of Motorola Edge 50 Pro hides a modern phone that is definitely worth paying attention to. There are some compromises, but they won’t spoil the positive impressions of the device. So is it really a treasure? All the details are below.

Packaging and equipment

Motorola Edge 50 Pro comes in a small box made of recycled cardboard. The box is perfumed, so when you open it, you can smell a pleasant odor, which improves the unpacking experience by 200%.

Inside we see the phone itself, documentation, a protective case, a paper clip to open the SIM card slot, a USB-C cable, and a 125W power supply.

Design and ergonomics

Motorola Edge 50 Pro has a metal frame and a plastic body. The screen and back panel are rounded at the edges. We reviewed the unusually cool Moonlight Pearl color with a pearl texture. It looks cool both in real life and on camera. There are also Luxe Lavender and Black Beauty colors with eco-leather backs.

On the front of the smartphone, we see thin bezels, a rounded screen, and a built-in front camera.

The rear panel features the aforementioned texture, the brand logo, and the camera module. The latter is protruding, but it has a very smooth transition from all sides, so it looks as neat as possible.

Motorola Edge 50 Pro has dimensions of 161.23×72.4×8.19 mm and weighs — 186 grams. The smartphone is light and compact, and it has a 6.7-inch screen. It’s easy to hold it with one hand and use it without using the other.

The controls on the body are standard for most modern models.

The test version is hardly slippery, but other colors with an eco-leather back cover will surely hold in the palm of your hand even better due to their texture. The bundled case improves the situation, but it covers only the back panel but leaves the ends open. Alternatively, you can take a transparent silicone case to protect all parts of the smartphone, but at the same time leave its great design on display.

On the Motorola Edge 50 Pro in Moonlight Pearl color, there are no traces of use or dust at all. So, even if you decide to carry the smartphone without a case, it will look impressive and not neglected, and you don’t need to do anything for this.

I’d like to highlight the IP68 water and dust protection. That is, the smartphone can be immersed in fresh water, but you shouldn’t do it. It’s just additional protection in case of an accident. It’s good to have it because not all smartphones in this segment have it.

Motorola Edge 50 Pro display

Motorola Edge 50 Pro is equipped with a 6.7-inch pOLED screen with a resolution of 2712×1220 pixels. The pixel density is 446 ppi, the aspect ratio is 20:9, and the display refresh rate is 144 Hz. The maximum brightness is 2000 nits, and there is also support for HDR10+.

The Always-On Display function was not included. In my opinion, this is an unnecessary functionality that I use only when testing smartphones for reviews. But there are many people who do turn on this feature, so for them it’s a clear disadvantage.

The screen of the smartphone has rounded edges, or as it is also called — waterfall screen. The display stands out for its rich colors and detail. Viewing angles are good, the image does not fade. It is possible to change the color temperature (Natural, Radiant, Vivid), adjust the refresh rate (automatic, 60 Hz, 90 Hz, 120 Hz, or 144 Hz), and more.

The maximum brightness of 2000 nits is impressive. Only full-fledged flagships have such an indicator, and not all of them do. However, in Motorola Edge 50 Pro, such values are available only when playing content with HDR, or at direct sunny angles.

The smartphone display has a built-in fingerprint scanner. It works quickly, but sometimes, like most similar sensors, it does not respond to wet fingers. Some also complain about its too low location. I found it comfortable and had no problems at all, but only personal impressions matter here.

As you can see, the screen is one of the main advantages of the model, but the lack of a certain function will definitely fall into the minuses. Because it is important from an objective point of view.

Sound and vibration response

Motorola Edge 50 Pro has stereo sound, but it is provided not by two full-fledged speakers, but by one main and one earpiece speaker. The sound is loud and clear, nothing buzzes even at 100%. We didn’t notice any bass or volume, but detail and clarity are more critical here, and they are at a good level.

Support for Dolby Atmos technology with several presets for different scenarios is declared. As for me, it really improves the sound quality, but it’s mostly suitable for watching videos on YouTube or a series on Netflix.

The smartphone supports many popular codecs such as SBC, AAC, LHDC V5, aptX Adaptive, and Opus, which means that the sound in the headphones will be of high quality, provided that they also support these codecs. There’s no 3.5 mm audio jack, so you’ll either have to connect via Bluetooth or a USB-C adapter.

The vibration response is pleasant and definitely not cheap, but it does not reach the level of flagships. However, some top models with a much higher price tag have a very similar vibration motor, so the difference is sometimes not noticeable at all. There are no options to further customize the vibration.

Motorola Edge 50 Pro cameras

Motorola Edge 50 Pro has a main triple camera. The main module here are 50 megapixels (ƒ/1.4) with optical stabilization and autofocus. The second module is a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle with a 120-degree viewing angle and ƒ/2.2 aperture. The third module is 10 megapixels, ƒ/2.0 aperture, autofocus and three times optical zoom. Both the main and ultra-wide-angle modules have a macro mode.

The main module takes 12.5 megapixels in standard mode, but you can also take 50 megapixels. However, this is only an option for processing photos on a PC in a photo editor, and for everything else, the basic mode is enough.

The main sensor produces bright, detailed, and mostly realistic photos, but they lack saturation. The ultra-wide-angle module also produces good photos with less detail, especially when there is enough light. Night mode is better in the main module because the second one has a lot of «noise».

Motorola Edge 50 Pro can shoot in 4K at 30 fps. It even has image stabilization, but this mode is really noticeable only when shooting in 1080p.

The front camera of the smartphone is a 50-megapixel sensor with an aperture of ƒ/1.9 and the ability to shoot in 4K. Photos are of high quality and detailed. You can use this camera not only to take photos, but also to shoot good videos on social media.

Productivity, software, and games

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is powered by an 8-core Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor made on a 4 nm process technology. The graphics chip here is Adreno 720. The RAM is 8 or 12 GB LPDDR4X. There is 128 or 512 GB of storage, and it is a 2.2 °C UFS format. You can increase the RAM by 12 virtual GB at the expense of ROM. The modules include 5G and eSIM support, Wi-Fi 6E, NFC, Bluetooth 5.4, and various satellite communication options (aGPS, GPS module, GLONASS, Galileo). There is also a slot for two nanoSim cards, but the memory cannot be expanded.

Although the smartphone didn’t get the flagship hardware, the chip is cold, which is good, especially in the case of the Snapdragon model. See all the test and benchmark results below.

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is definitely not a gaming smartphone, but it has enough power to run all the popular mobile games, as well as well-known PC ports. It will only pull it all off not at ultra-high, but at medium-high graphics settings with a nice fps.

The operating system here is Android 14 with a minimalist shell from Motorola. The latter has almost no effect on the appearance of the system, which is very close to «pure» Android, not cluttered with applications, ads, etc. If you like this kind of design and the Google Pixel series, then the Motorola Edge 50 Pro and other recent models of the manufacturer are very close to this and are definitely worthy of attention.

Autonomy of Motorola Edge 50 Pro

Motorola Edge 50 Pro has a 4500 mAh battery. This may not seem like much, but the smartphone lasts a day and a half with standard Internet activity, some games, watching videos on YouTube, social networks, etc. without any problems. This is a good result for its size. In the PCMark test, the smartphone showed a result of 11 hours and 19 minutes, which confirms the adequacy of the battery life.

The smartphone also supports ultra-fast charging at 125 watts (!). Motorola Edge 50 Pro actually charges from 0 to 100% in 20 minutes (!). This is something incredible. There is also fast 50W wireless charging, but only with a proprietary station from Motorola. And there is also reverse charging with a power of 10 watts.

Experience of using Motorola Edge 50 Pro

I don’t like smartphones with waterfall screens, but the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is cool. Of course, it would be ideal for me if it had the same flat screen, but it is what it is. If you like rounded corners and rounded edges, then the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is for you.

It’s definitely stylish, and it’s also cool that the protruding camera module was visually reduced, cool colors and cool materials were added to make it look pricier than it really is.

The screen is one of the best parts of the smartphone. It’s bright and vivid. The device is also compact, although the screen is 6.7 inches. Probably, this was done by rounding the corners and edges on both sides.

The smartphone is also comfortable in the hand, and it has a great package. Yes, the cover doesn’t protect the case much, but it’s good that it’s there because many other manufacturers don’t even put it on. I also liked the perfumed box. This is a feature of Motorola smartphones, and it has a positive effect on first impressions.

And the main feature is superfast charging, which, together with adequate battery life, makes the smartphone non-volatile for a day of use. And this is with a thin body and a 4500 mAh battery. And when it’s dead, it takes just 20 minutes to recharge. In the settings, you need to activate the turbocharging mode because without it, charging will be a little slower, but still fast.

Price and competitors

Motorola Edge 50 Pro is sold at a price from UAH 19,500. In large networks of the type «Hello», its price is UAH 22,999. In my opinion, the price is definitely adequate, and the smartphone is on the verge of a mid-range budget and flagships.

Of course, he has competitors, and they are well-known and serious. For example, Google Pixel 7 Pro or Google Pixel 8. There are also OnePlus Ace 3 and OnePlus 12R. You should also pay attention to Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus, Samsung Galaxy A55, and last year’s affordable flagship Samsung Galaxy S23 FE. The latter is the most serious competitor, as it is more relevant than ever, and the price has already dropped.
