Samira, or Sam, is a cancer patient who lives in a New York hospital with a cute cat named Frodo and has long since lost all hope of recovery. One day, in exchange for a promise to visit Sam’s favorite pizzeria, the bearded nurse Reuben persuades her to join a trip to the theater. However, the event is marred by the sudden arrival of deadly aliens, blind as moles but with super-sensitive hearing.

Samira’s plans did not include a sudden apocalypse, but she is determined to get to Harlem, where her dream pizzeria is located. However, to do this, she needs to at least survive in a world where everything is rapidly collapsing and going wrong. Along the way, the heroine meets Eric, a twitchy Englishman who has come to New York to build a career as a lawyer. Together, they try to hold on to their lives amidst the total chaos and destruction. In 2018, John Krasinski, who had never been seen in the horror genre before, delivered a first-rate, suspenseful action movie with an interesting concept. The latter was that the slightest rumble, creak of a door, noise from a battery-powered toy, etc. could lead to tragic consequences. «A Quiet Place» relied on cinematography, using appropriate cinematic techniques, so keeping dialogues to a minimum looked extremely appropriate, and the sound nuance made you literally stick to the screen.

Of course, there were questions about some points in the plot from the point of view of basic logic, including the sequel. But this did not negate the high-quality genre performance, which was one of the main reasons for the franchise’s success.

A different director, Michael Sarnoski, worked on the new film, and Krasinski co-wrote it. On the one hand, «Day One» follows the best achievements of its predecessors, when tension arises again in the frame due to the need to observe complete silence. But at the same time, the film, like the main character played by the wonderful Lupita Nyong’o, goes its own way.First of all, the action moves from the pastoral countryside to the bustling Big Apple, and this colossal contrast is immediately felt. When the noisy metropolis suddenly becomes quiet, it has a special effect. At the same time, there are no questions about the logic of Samira’s actions because her behavior is deliberately illogical and even absurd, given her situation, her personal apocalypse.

Only those viewers who demand answers will remain dissatisfied. What are these creatures and where did they come from? What is their main motivation and can they do anything but destroy everything around them? After all, why has humanity never been able to fight back against these creatures of hell?

«Day One» does not aim to satisfy such requests, at least, one should not expect direct answers. Yes, the plot offers some new details about the bloodthirsty creatures, but they serve as an important element of the storytelling rather than a desire to reveal any cards. In general, the authors should be commended: they tried to combine an intense apocalyptic horror about an invasion with a very down-to-earth story about friendship and support for each other, about risk and self-sacrifice in difficult times. At times, this synthesis fails noticeably, and this significantly lowers the degree of tension. But the screenwriters are primarily concerned with the development of the warm relationship between Sam and Eric, which is the basis of their story. This is what makes the movie human, close and understandable to each of us.

At the same time, a close connection is indeed felt between Lupita Nyong’o, winner of the «Oscar» for her role in the drama «12 Years a Slave», and the English actor Joseph Quinn, who has a sincere audience response. However, almost the main star of this end of the world is the cat Frodo, who became a real decoration of the movie. This furry creature is an openly cheating move, but Ridley Scott has already pulled off something similar in his «Alien» why can’t Sarnoski do the same?

«A Quiet Place: Day One» offers an effective, moving story that unfolds against the backdrop of a thrilling beginning to the end. Therefore, you will only be able to get into it if you are more interested in c̶a̶t̶s people than in monsters.
