Three years have passed since deadly chupacabras with invulnerable armor and powerful matsakas emerged from the ground and began a methodical extermination of humanity. And, apparently, these creatures are hunting defenseless Homo sapiens not for food or specific resources, but simply to squeeze the planet. All those who managed to survive are located in the mountains because for some unknown reason the enemy does not enter the territory above 2.5 km.

In one of these settlements, which was formed among the picturesque Rocky Mountains of Colorado, a single father, Will, lives with his son, Hunter. The boy has a rather serious lung disease, so he needs oxygen filters, which Will is rapidly running out of. The hero has no choice but to try to get to the hospital in the nearest city of Boulder, but to do so, he has to overcome a path where danger lurks at every turn. Enlisting the support of his friend Katie and scientist Nina, who still hopes to find a way to kill the monsters, the trio embarks on a journey full of risks and deadly threats. No wonder the official Ukrainian poster features the inscription «from the film producers “A Quiet Place” and “The Purge”», in particular, the post-apocalyptic horror by John Krasinski. «Elevation» borrows from that film, albeit with a slightly modified but similar concept of a forced new world order: there, you couldn’t make noise, here, you can’t go below a safe height. However, with similar introductions and almost equally modest budgets, these two films are strikingly different from each other, and these differences are definitely not in favor of the novelty.

Where Krasinski used «sound» nuance extremely well and cranked up the tension to the maximum, and his genre film really worked, the creators of «Elevation» didn’t seem to have a clue what kind of movie they were making.

For a post-apocalyptic horror, the film can hardly be characterized as scary. For an action movie, there are not enough action scenes, and those that do exist cannot be called spectacular (although a few camera pirouettes clearly did the trick). For a thriller, there’s a lack of quality suspense. For a sane science fiction, the story is limited to too superficial dashed-dot mythology, for a drama — a couple of flashbacks and flat characters whose tragic fate is impossible to penetrate. In other words, there are enough hints of realization in one direction or another, but no good execution.

In fact, the whole movie has all the makings of a good post-apocalyptic story about fighting the next chupacabras, but it’s limited to these makings. As a result, it looks very formulaic, unpretentious and simple. In the end, it’s just plain boring. But there are already 11 seasons to torture yourself with boredom in the post-apocalypse on screen «The Walking Dead» + a whole bunch of spinoffs.

In order to wait for any noteworthy events, the viewer will have to endure a purely dialogic exposition and a cliffhanger that lasts at least half an hour. And this is despite the fact that the total running time, excluding the final credits, is just over 80 minutes. The dialogues themselves and the supposedly important flashbacks, designed to add drama to the story, don’t really add anything and rather make you feel deadly bored.

When the chatter finally dies down and the first soil appears on the horizon. It will add the necessary dynamics and at least stir up the viewer who has already fallen asleep. However, the creators of the resource do not have the resources for long or even large-scale action scenes. After this fleeting burst, you will have to wait until the long-suffering heroes lazily work out the next dialog and get to the next quest. At some point, the victims will be trapped in a mine, and their tossing and turning in a dark, claustrophobic environment may even remind them of «space where no one will hear your scream». However, the whole suspense is reduced to catastrophically banal techniques and clichéd plot twists.

The final act is also quite predictable and predictable, but it’s not to say that it inspires confidence and looks believable. It looks more like a convenient maneuver for screenwriters with a claim to a sequel.

Given the modest ambition of the full idea, the authors of the film do not even want to criticize it for its weakness and secondary nature, or to pick on the numerous problems of the narrative. This is a typical average movie that manages to be almost non-irritating in its modest niche. I watched it and forgot about it in five minutes. Except that the beauty and majesty of the Rocky Mountains risks stirring the mind of a bored viewer for a while longer.
