After the successful launch of the new game Dragon Age: The Veilguard, many new players of the series will probably want to dive into the original trilogy. But for those hoping for a remaster in the style of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, there is already disappointing news. The creative director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard creative director John Epler noted that such a project «would be difficult» to implement, because almost none of BioWare’s current employees know how to work with the studio’s old engine.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition received positive reviews upon its release in 2021. This was the result of improved performance, updated graphics, new lighting, modified gameplay, etc. Many would agree that the Dragon Age series deserves the same update.
However, in a recent interview, John Epler, who has been with BioWare since the first Dragon Age installment was released in 2009, noted that while he would love to see a remaster of the trilogy, it would be difficult due to the different engines on which the different games are built.
Unlike the Mass Effect trilogy developed on Unreal Engine 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition is based on EA’s Frostbite engine, while Dragon Age 1 and 2 used BioWare’s proprietary Eclipse engine.
«I think I’m one of about 20 people at BioWare who have ever worked with Eclipse,» Epler explained. «[Remastering Dragon Age] is going to be a challenge, just like Mass Effect was, but we love the original games».
At the same time, Epler did not completely reject the idea of a Dragon Age remaster. «Never say «never», — he added, leaving hope for fans.
It is likely that EA’s interest in the remaster and the future of the Dragon Age series in general will depend on the success of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which launched quite well last week. EA has not yet announced official data, but The Veilguard reached a peak of 89,418 simultaneous players on Steamwhich is a new record for a single-player game from EA. However, it is already known that this part will not receive story DLCusers can expect only game optimization and a few small content updates.
