1Password optimizes password issuance based on user’s geolocation

Published by Vadym Karpus

1Password has introduced a new feature that makes it easier to find logins, passwords, or access codes based on your location. Now you can link a specific physical location to items in the app, and they will automatically appear in the new Nearby section on the main tab if you are nearby.

The password manager already allows you to quickly access frequently used or favorite passwords in the mobile app without having to search for them. However, if you have a long list of passwords, this section can quickly become cluttered. Adding location data can help ensure that only the most relevant passwords are displayed when you open the app — for example, your medical records at the doctor’s office or travel documents at the airport. This reduces the need to scroll through a list or remember the exact name of an item to find it.

You can add locations to new or already saved items in 1Password either directly at the place itself or remotely — with the new map view feature that allows you to find the desired location even from another location.

You can also limit the number of items displayed in the main tab by radius. The app allows you to choose a range from 50 feet (approximately 15 meters) to 10 miles (16 km). However, a range that is too wide can make the list too long again, which makes this feature useless.

In addition, the new map view in the app allows you to view all the locations associated with passwords and other saved items in your account.

AgileBits, the developer of 1Password, assures that your location data is not stored, shared, or tracked. The determination of which passwords are nearby is performed locally on your device, so your current location is not transmitted outside the gadget. Additionally, the company has introduced another level of security: users can completely disable this feature at any time.
