Microsoft has begun testing an early version of Copilot for Gaming, a gaming assistant. The company’s employees already have access to Copilot in the Xbox mobile app. Although it looks similar to the existing Copilot chatbot, it was designed to integrate with an Xbox account.
This service will eventually be available on multiple devices — including Xbox consoles — and will act as a game assistant that can guide the player, launch games, help with settings, etc. At this stage, only an internal version for Microsoft employees is available (and this may change before release). Among its features:
Just like in the standard Copilot, you can write or speak while asking questions. Several voice styles are available: energetic, wise, relaxed, or heroic. Microsoft is also working on animated virtual assistant characters, but they are not yet available in the Xbox version.
The company plans to add even more features to Copilot for Gaming in the future. For example, Copilot Vision will allow AI «to see» what you see when you play a game on your PC. This will potentially allow Copilot to accompany you in the game in detail, giving you tips on how to play games such as Overwatch 2 or Minecraft.
This first version of Copilot for Gaming will soon be available to Xbox Insider testers, and Microsoft promises to regularly update the functionality based on feedback. It is not yet known when this Copilot will appear on the Xbox consoles themselves, as testing has just started on the Xbox mobile app.
While there is currently no great need for a chatbot to install games or check achievements, this may change as new features are added. If Microsoft does turn it into an AI-powered game coach to help with the game, it could be an interesting breakthrough.
