Almost a third of sole proprietors plan to close their business in the near future – the consequences of tax increases

Opendatabot has conducted the largest study of the status and plans of Ukrainian private entrepreneurs. Almost 32 thousand private entrepreneurs took part in the survey. As it turned out, a fairly large proportion of the survey participants plan to close their businesses. Among the surveyed entrepreneurs, most of them work in retail (24.6%) and IT (21%).

Thus, 8621 surveyed entrepreneurs (27%) plan to close their businesses in the near future. At the same time, 2297 sole proprietors (7%) planned to close this year. Another 6,324 participants (20%) indicated that they plan to cease operations next year.

Tax increases were the main reason why the majority of sole proprietors (62%) decided to close their businesses. Only one in five entrepreneurs (19%) stop their business because of difficulties they are facing. However, even if a sole proprietor is determined to close down, it is not so easy to do so now. A large-scale cyberattack by Russian hackers on state registries has significantly complicated the procedure for closing a business, and in some cases makes it impossible.

The introduction of the military tax for individual entrepreneurs has led to the number of closed businesses far exceeding the number of new ones. Since the law was signed, more than 24,000 sole proprietorships have ceased operations, while only 10,000 have opened, which is 2.2 times less. For comparison, a year ago the situation was the opposite: for every 4 new sole proprietorships, there was only 1 closed one.

«Opendatabot asked Danylo Hetmantsev, Chairman of the Committee on Finance, Taxation and Customs Policy, for a comment. However, at the time of publication, we have not received a response,», the service reports.
