Amazon has announced that it will close its Android app store in the summer of 2025. The corporation has many successful projects — Amazon Music, Prime Video, and Twitch — but hasn’t been able to beat Google Play.
The company has notified developers that they will not be able to submit new Android apps, writes one of the developers. Existing programs will receive updates until August 20, and the store will close on the same day.
Amazon offered to use its platform as an alternative to Google accounts when it tried to compete in the mobile app space. The gradual curtailment of programs shows that the company has reconsidered its strategy.
In 2024, Amazon announced that it would shut down its Windows app store on March 5, 2025. The reason was the end of Microsoft’s support for the Windows for Android (WSA) subsystem. At the time, the company claimed that its store would continue to work on Fire TV, Fire Tablet, and Android devices, but plans have changed.
The corporation does not stop at the existing successful (and not so successful) projects, and has already entered the competition with the Chinese giant Temu. The project has set a course for insanely low prices for consumer goods. Amazon’s empire also sees potential in car sales — at the end of 2024, it launched Amazon Autos beta version.
Amazon Kindle owners are also out of luck — the company will remove the feature that allowed to download purchased e-books (to prevent piracy) via USB. On the other hand, users used the function more via Wi-Fi, but some older models do not have access to a wireless network.
