AMD’s technical demonstration showcases achievements new Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics cards in ray tracing. But halos, artifacts, and «soap» are not very exciting.
Commentators on the Internet have noticed a generally noticeably worse image quality than the NVIDIA RTX 50. AMD has pleasantly surprised with the $599 Radeon RX 9070 XT, which seems to be a good one, will not be in such severe shortage as the RTX 5070 Ti from a competitor. However, the demo was more disappointing than inspiring.
The ToyShop demo shows a robot creating a companion, wandering around the house for a while, and then flying out onto a futuristic city street with busy traffic. The video demonstrates AMD’s achievements in path tracing, a more complex variant of ray tracing. While the lighting effects look good at first, the speeding motion spoils the experience.
When the ToyShop tech demo shows cars during a supersampling noise reduction demonstration, artifacts become visible on the vehicles. In addition, static buildings and other objects in the background appear out of focus. The foliage at the entrance to the park turns into a blurry mixture of textures.
While the demo confirms AMD’s progress, the «red team clearly has more work to do. After publishing the demo on Reddit began to discuss whether the RX 9070 series is so valuable and necessary. AMD’s defenders argue that the quality of path tracing is not the main factor when choosing a video card. However, although this feature is not used in every game, it is one of the main reasons to replace an old video card with something more modern.
The demo also reignited the debate over the comparison of FSR 4 and DLSS 4 — NVIDIA technology seems to be much better and more useful. RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards will be available starting March 6.
