Apple expands the Vision Pro universe: new M5 chip, glasses, and delays for the budget version

Published by Vadym Karpus

Apple is planning to release an updated Vision Pro headset with an unannounced M5 chip. This will happen in 2025, according to Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The current Vision Pro model is equipped with the M2 chip, which appeared in 2022.

Kuo did not say whether the updated Vision Pro model will have other new features or changes compared to the current version released earlier this year. At the same time, Apple has delayed the release of a cheaper version of the Vision Pro until «after 2027», the analyst said. The current Vision Pro model costs from $3499, and this high price undoubtedly limited sales.

«At $3,500, it’s not a mass market product,» said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a recent interview when asked about the Vision Pro. «Right now, this is a product for early adopters. People who want to have tomorrow’s technology today, — these are the people for whom it is designed. Fortunately, there are enough of them to make it interesting».

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also mentioned Apple’s plans for the Vision line of devices. Similar to Kuo, Gurman noted that Apple is planning a «chip upgrade» for the Vision Pro, but did not specify whether this will happen in 2025. He also believes that Apple is continuing to develop a cheaper version of the Vision Pro headset with «simplified» technology. However, Gurman did not provide any data on the release date of this device.

At the same time, Gurman added that Apple is «seriously considering» the possibility of releasing a glasses-like device that will connect to the iPhone.

«I also keep hearing that Apple is seriously considering a device that would rely on the computing components of the iPhone and serve as a movie viewing accessory,» he said. «It would be something similar to the glasses offered by companies like Xreal. The advantage for Apple is that it would solidify the iPhone as the center of the company’s product ecosystem and offer something much more popular than the $3500 Vision Pro».
