Apple is working on a giant foldable iPad — it will run macOS apps and be released in 2028

Rumors about Apple’s foldable devices have been swirling for years, but it looks like the first such gadget might be an iPad, not an iPhone.

Reliable Apple insider Mark Gurman from Bloomberg writes that the company is working on a giant foldable tablet that, when unfolded, will measure 20 inches and look like “two iPad Pros side by side.” By the time it launches—potentially in 2028—the device will run both iPadOS and macOS apps.

“I don’t believe it will be a true iPad-Mac hybrid, but the device will feature elements of both systems. By 2028, iPadOS should be advanced enough to run macOS apps,” Gurman writes.

The report notes that Apple is currently focused on technology that will help completely eliminate creases on the iPad—with the first prototypes not quite achieving this.

“Prototypes of the new product in Apple’s industrial design group have an almost invisible crease. But it’s too early to say whether the company will be able to eliminate it entirely. Samsung Electronics, which released its first foldable smartphone five years ago, has not succeeded,” it says.

Gurman’s report also aligns with Omdia’s market research plan, which predicted that Apple would release an 18.8-inch foldable tablet/laptop/monitor with an OLED display in 2028.
