Apple had grand plans for «conversational» Siri and its AI features, but not everything is going according to schedule, an insider says.
iOS 19 was expected to bring revolutionary changes to the voice assistant, including the integration of a large language model (LLM). The update, which previously delayed, was supposed to make Siri more intelligent and «lively» in communication. According to Mark Gurman, this time, Apple is also not in time — the updated Siri will appear no earlier than 2026 with iOS 20.
The company faced difficulties during the development of the next generation of Siri. It was expected that Apple would introduce it in iOS 19.4 or iOS 19.5, but now these plans are risking. An insider suggested that the June presentation of Apple’s WWDC 2025 will not even mention a full-fledged Siri update.
According to Gourmet, some Siri improvements will be coming in iOS 19, but the most anticipated features seem to be coming only in iOS 20. Apple is currently working on several innovations in iOS 18.5, including a notification system that learns owner behavior and better integration of AI into apps. But it looks like these updates may be delayed as well.
So far, all the breakthrough features of Siri and Apple Intelligence have been postponed — major competitors made premium AI features free of charge. Inception Labs also presented the world’s first large language model (LLM) based on diffusion, developed for commercial use.
It seems that instead of significant updates, Apple is trying to improve its devices by adding the ability to choose between different AI models. In particular, the company «made friends» ChatGPT with Siri, as well as integrated Apple Intelligence into Gemini. Also, Apple chose the Alibaba Qwen model as an AI service provider for the Chinese market.
At the same time, many iPhone owners are not very satisfied with Apple Intelligence. This AI model did not receive the iPhone 16 at the launch, but it was started gradually roll out with the release of iOS 18.1. However, there was the following problem — AI functions required twice as much memory. In addition, the added service produced dubious results in news reports that had to be curtailed due to a critical inaccuracy.
