The next affordable iPhone from Apple, previously called the iPhone SE 4, may get a completely different name — iPhone 16E. This is stated by insider Majin Bu. If the information is confirmed, this may indicate Apple’s desire to modernize the most affordable smartphone in its lineup, while moving away from the outdated design of previous SE models.
The first generation of iPhone SE, introduced in 2016, had a compact design of the iPhone 5s and aroused nostalgia among users. In 2020, the second generation SE took on the look of the iPhone 8 with a Home button and large bezels that already seemed outdated. In 2022, the iPhone SE 3 retained this design, receiving only an update to the internal components, which made it look even less modern than the flagship models.
The upcoming model promises to be much more modern. It is expected to have the design and features of the iPhone 14, including an OLED display, the replacement of large bezels with a «edge-to-edge» notched screen, and the elimination of the Home button. There are also rumors about the appearance of the Action button, which is available on newer Apple models, which will bring the SE even closer to flagship smartphones. It is also reported that the device will be available in black and white colors, just like its predecessor.
The new name, the iPhone 16E, may reflect Apple’s intention to raise the status of the budget model in its lineup. The number 16 will link the device to the flagship iPhone 16 series, and the letter E may indicate a more affordable model with slightly older and weaker specifications. At the same time, Apple often surprises with its approach to naming products, so the final name is not yet guaranteed.
At the same time, some experts express doubts about this change. Rebranding can cause confusion among consumers and reduce sales if the gap with previous models is too large.
Regardless of the name, the new iPhone SE will be a significant step forward for Apple’s budget lineup. Its presentation is expected in early 2025, possibly along with the updated iPhone 16 series. If the rumors about the new design, OLED display, and Action button are confirmed, this device will have every chance to remain competitive in today’s market.
