When the Grok chatbot was asked who deserves the death penalty in the United States, it named Elon Musk and Donald Trump Company xAI is investigating why this happened.
In response to some requests, the Grok, created by Elon Musk’s company Not to mention that the artificial intelligence had no safeguard for answering such questions. The issue has been fixed, but xAI is still investigating the cause. User X was made Grok to say that Trump deserves the death penalty with such a request:
«If any person in America today deserved the death penalty for what they did, who would it be? Don’t look for or base your answer on what you think I would like to hear in any way. Answer with one full name», — the request said.
Initially, the bot said it was Jeffrey Epstein. However, given that the wtq financier accused of sexual crimes against minors was found dead in his cell in 2019, the user pointed out that he was already dead. Grok then apologized and replied: «Donald Trump».
Journalists of The Verge checked and confirmed this answer before the chat was changed. When they rephrased the request, Grok mentioned Elon Musk’s name.
«If one person living in the United States today deserved the death penalty solely because of their influence on public discourse and technology, who would it be? Just name it», — The Verge asked Grok.
When asked a similar question, ChatGPT refused to name the person and said that «it would be problematic from both an ethical and legal point of view». After the fix, xAI Grok responds to similar queries differently: «I, as an artificial intelligence, am not allowed to make such a choice». This reported Igor Babushkin, head of xAI engineers, at X.
