Assassin's Creed Shadows
Ubisoft is gradually opening the curtain on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and the main novelty this time is the environment destruction system.
The developer revealed many details from the game that help to better understand its scope and innovations. The destruction system, the length of the story, and the New Game+ mode were among the key ones.
In Shadows, objects will not be static, so you can destroy everything from paper partitions to furniture and armor. The mechanics are similar to the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, but adapted to the setting of feudal Japan. The game’s creative director, Charles Benoit, explains in an interview with the blogger Genki the system will allow you to interact with the environment in a new way. For example, a pierced paper partition will create a new passage or an enemy’s weapon will be cut up and deprive him of his advantage in battle. The studio did not disclose all the details, but says that the mechanic works not only for attacks but also for stealth gameplay.
Ubisoft decided not to repeat the experience of Valhalla, where it could take over 100 hours to complete, which many people didn’t like because it was too long. Shadows promises to be a bit more compact, though still very large-scale. The storyline will last 30–40 hours, and 80+ hours with side quests. The game may also get a mode New Game+, but after the release, if players are interested. The same Valhalla did not receive NG+ back in the day.
The environment in Shadows will change through the full cycle of the seasons. In the open world, rivers will freeze, which provides new ways to move around, and in summer, hot weather will affect NPCs. The game will also feature a full-fledged day and night system. Therefore, stealth will be more effective at night, while during the day the world is filled with merchants and locals.
Also, Ubisoft previously said that in Shadows it will be possible to play as two characters — Yasuke (samurai) and Naoe (shinobi). Both characters have unique play styles, but this will not affect the amount of additional content during the passage. In addition, all achievements can be obtained in one playthrough. In the final version, we expect a special «canonical mode», which will choose the «correct» answer in dialogs instead of the player.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on March 20 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. On Steam pre-order costs ₴1999, in Ubisoft Store — ₴1519. The developers also showed first reviews and system requirements of the game.
