Tom Cruise, at the age of 62, continues to perform all his stunts on his own, and of course, the new installment of the «Mission Impossible» franchise is no exception — in the previous shots of the film, we have already seen the actor flying, clinging to an upside-down plane, and in the new teaser, we saw a daring underwater stunt.
In this scene, Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt explores the wreckage of a submerged submarine at depth — shots for which the film crew had to use a «8.5 million liter pool of water», and he was suspended and had to rotate on command, the actor told interview with Empire.
«Cruz wore a specially designed suit and mask, but could only wear the equipment for 10 minutes at a time, actually being on the verge of hypoxia (lack of oxygen in the body tissues)», — the magazine writes.
The actor himself added that he breathed «his own carbon dioxide» during filming.
«I was inhaling my own carbon dioxide,» Cruz said. «It was building up in my body and affecting my muscles. None of this was supposed to be noticeable».
«Mission Impossible 8» director Christopher McQuarrie confirmed that the underwater filming was a real physical torment for the actor, given that the structure of the pool was not only rotating, but there were many pieces of debris floating in the water itself.
«We had to find a way to make this environment as chaotic and messy as humanly possible,» McQuarrie said. «But in a way that Tom could navigate and survive».
Earlier, Cruise said that he repeatedly fainted during filming, in particular in the scene with the airplane:
«When you stick your face out [of the plane], at speeds over 120-130 miles per hour, you don’t get any oxygen», Cruz says. «So I had to teach myself how to breathe. There were moments when I physically lost consciousness and couldn’t get back into the cockpit.
The eighth installment of the Ethan Hunt series is called «Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning» / Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning and a premiere date set for May 23, 2025. In the story, Hunt is expected to save the world: this time from a dangerous AI program called The Entity, which seems to predict the protagonist’s every move and can lead to disaster if it falls into the wrong hands. The character also encounters an old enemy from the past named Gabriel (Esai Morales).
In addition to Cruise and Morales, the cast of «Mission Impossible 8» includes Simon Pegg, Vianne Reames, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Clementieff, Shay Wiggum, Henry Cerny, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga, and Indira Varma. Among the newcomers: Hannah Weddingham, Janet McTeer, Holt McCullaney, Katie O’Brien, Nick Offerman and Tramell Tillman.
It is worth noting that the successful reception of the film is extremely important for Paramount, especially given that the previous installment of the series («Mission: Impossible: Impossible – Part One»), despite grossing $567 million, brought the studio losses of more than $200 million due to an excessively high budget The second part is rumored to have cost $300 million.
