Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will get paid audio profiles: how much does it cost and what does it mean for players?

The upcoming game Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will have paid audio profiles at launch. This will allow players to take their tactical sound perception to a new level with personalized profiles adapted to the physiological characteristics of each user. At first glance, this may seem like a pay-to-win feature, but in fact, this option is not as controversial as it may seem at first. It is already available in other AAA games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy XIV.

Having the right sound settings is an important element in every Call of Duty game. Being able to not only hear the footsteps of an approaching enemy, but also distinguish them from those of your teammates is key to taking down the enemy and winning multiplayer matches. Accurately identifying the sources of enemy gunfire and signals are also important components of the game’s sound environment, and Black Ops 6 improves these aspects with sound updates.

Developers from Treyarch Studios have revealed new features of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, including improvements to the sound system. The new Enhanced Headphone Mode feature utilizes Embody Immerse Spatial Audio technology to improve the accuracy of sound direction. It is compatible with any headphones or headsets, significantly improving the spatial sound experience for players. However, Black Ops 6 will offer an additional option to pay for a personalized profile. This has caused confusion and controversy among the community.

As stated in the Call of Duty blog, players can further enhance their audio experience by creating a personalized profile that «takes into account the player’s physical characteristics, such as the shape of their ear or head». More information can be found on the Embody website. It also states that the universal profile is available for free to all players and offers perfectly tuned sound for every explosion or step. At the same time, players can additionally purchase a personalized profile for $19.99. It will be adapted to their individual physiological characteristics and will be available for 5 years after a one-time payment.

The purchase of this profile depends on personal preference and is in no way a pay-to-win element, as the basic enhanced feature is available to everyone through the universal profile. However, for those who want a more personalized experience, a purchase can be made on the Embody website for Steam or Battle.net, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S users will be able to purchase it directly in-game. This feature will not be available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Black Ops 6.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be released on October 25.
