China launches 10G internet — 4K movies download in seconds

Published by Vadym Karpus

Imagine: you press «download movie in 4K» — and instead of waiting for several minutes, you wait only a few seconds. Now add to this a dozen more connected gadgets, a smart home, online games, 8K video — and no network lag. Does it sound like a fantasy? But in China, it’s already a reality.

Huawei and China Unicom have jointly launched the first 10G broadband connection in the new Xiongan district near Beijing. This high-speed connection is based on a leading 50G PON solution. By upgrading the underlying architecture of the fiber access network, the bandwidth per user is increased from the traditional gigabit level to 10 Gbps, and network latency is reduced to milliseconds.

At Mr. Cao’s home, the actual measured download speed reached 9834 Mbps, the upload speed reached 1008 Mbps, and the latency was stable at 3 ms. This far exceeds current mainstream home broadband standards.

This achievement confirms the maturity of 50G PON technology and lays the foundation for future high-bandwidth applications such as 8K video, 10G cloud NAS, virtual and augmented reality, and cloud gaming.

«It used to take several minutes to download a 4K movie, but now it takes only a few seconds. What surprised me even more was that when multiple smart devices were used at home, the network was still uninterrupted, and 8K video on demand, 4K monitoring, ultra-fast cloud eSports, and smart home systems could all work stably,” said Mr. Cao.

For comparison, currently the world’s best average fixed internet can be found in Singapore. Its average speed in this country is 336.45 Mbps. In Ukraine, this figure is much lower and amounts to 42.68 Mbps. Against this backdrop, the new figures from China look out of this world.
