EA has done something cool — opened the source code of old Command & Conquer games and added Steam Workshop support for these games and several others.
Fans who grew up with these games will get more mods, custom maps, and opportunities to create their own content. Through Steam Workshop, they can be installed in one click (no tambourine dancing).
EA has made the code for such iconic strategies publicly available:
The code released under the GPL license can be used by anyone to create their own projects, improvements, or even their own games based on these mechanics. All files can be found on the official EA’s GitHub account.
Steam Workshop also received support:
EA has also updated all map editors (Mission Editor and World Builder), so players will be able to publish their creations in the Workshop immediately. The update for mods includes XML files, scripts, shaders, and maps for all games running on the SAGE engine (Generals, Tiberium Wars, and Kane’s Wrath).
In 2020 C&C Remastered Collection was released. But after that, EA did not revive the series: no announcements, no new games, etc. At least now, the publisher has not only provided the source code, but also more freedom.
