Counterfeit AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3Ds reappear amid shortages

Published by Andrii Rusanov

In Taiwan, fake AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D chips have been found again, remade from previous generation chips. The shortage of popular chips continues, and this is not the first wave of such counterfeits.

Identifying counterfeit Ryzen 7 9800X3D processors is not easy: the placement of capacitors and the markings on the printed circuit board are not obvious. The most noticeable difference is the color of the board (the 9800X3D is blue, not green).

On the sample shown on the Chiphell site, the code is incorrect—it corresponds to a Ryzen 7000 series chip. Typically, fakes consist of boards from previous generation processors with a heat spreader, under which there is often nothing. Since Ryzen 7000 processors were produced in millions, it appears someone gained access to many printed circuit boards.

There are no obvious signs of counterfeiting on the spreader itself. However, the capacitors are either missing or misplaced. Unfortunately, AMD does not have a public change notification system like Intel, so they are often found during the inspection of new chip batches.

The scale of the counterfeiting is unknown; currently, it involves only individual found samples. However, it is worth carefully examining chips and choosing reliable stores.
