One of the most expensive movies in history received one of the worst ratings on Rotten Tomatoes — currently «Electric State» retains 23% «freshness» with most negative reviews.

«Electric State» — is a sci-fi epic adaptation of Simon Stalenhaeg’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name. Set in an alternate 1990s where robots that once coexisted peacefully with humans now live in exile after a failed uprising, the story follows teenager Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown) as she travels the American West with a mysterious robot and eccentric smuggler Keats (Chris Pratt) in search of her brother (Woody Norman). Also among the cast are Jonathan Ke Kwan (Dr. Amherst), Stanley Tucci (Ethan Skate), Giancarlo Esposito (Colonel Marshall Bradbury) and others.

«Electric State» was directed by the Russo brothers, known for their work on «The Avengers», and cost $320 million to produce. The film will debut on Netflix on March 14, but the embargo on reviews and scores has already lifted, so you can read the preliminary impressions of the authors of specialized publications. They are mostly negative, and here are some direct quotes:

  • Courtney Howard, Variety: «Joe and Anthony Russo surprisingly underestimate the scope of their source material, turning Stolenhagen’s outstanding and bleak thriller into a bizarre mess of imprints of ideas derived from several much better cinematic sources».
  • Giovanni Lago, Next Best Picture: «”Electric State” — is yet another indication of the regression of the Russo brothers as a filmmaking team to something that, at this point, only makes films that are not even worth exposing to».
  • Alistair Ryder, Looper: «Everything from the character design to the story beats feels like the results of ChatGPT’s hastily created work».
  • Tori Brazier, Metro: «A movie that is hard to relate to — Who is it for? Millennials who may feel cynical about the nostalgia that unfolds? Fans of the novel who have already opposed the movie because of the trailer? It’s a bit strange».
  • David Ehrlich, IndieWire: «Truth be told, there’s not a single laugh — or even a smile — in this ruthlessly dated ordeal that does for sci-fi adventure comedies what «The Grey Man» did for thrillers: absolutely nothing»
