«DNA is in there»: the second season of The Last Of Us will receive noticeable changes and an actor from «The Matrix»

The continuation of the series The Last Of Us will not be a retelling of the game, but will get a «new lease on life». In addition, the creators will bring back the cut scene from the first season, which once made Pedro Pascal join the show.

Showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin are preparing not just an adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2, but significant changes in the plot. The creators are adding characters that were previously only mentioned in the game. The series will pay more attention to secondary characters because now it’s «different version of that story».

«I love the changes that we’ve made. It’s a different version of that story, but its DNA is in there. Maybe more than excited, I’m really curious what their reaction will be» Druckmann said.

Pedro Pascal (Joel) admitted that the scene that was cut in the first season was the impetus for him to join the show. In it, Joel visited a therapist in the quarantine zone of Boston. The scene was meant to reveal his character more deeply and show the emotional barriers that arose from trauma and loss. Now showrunner Craig Mazin says it will appear in the second season.

The changes to the plot include not only the return of cut scenes, but also the expansion of the cast. The main new addition to the cast is Joe Pantoliano, known for his roles in The Matrix», The Sopranos» and Bad Boys». He will play Eugene, a military man from the quarantine zone who was mentioned only in dialogues and notes. In the second part of the game, he lived in Jackson and left behind a cache with cannabis and other supplies. But in the series, he will get a full storyline.

He was joined by a number of other actors:

  • Alanna Ubach («Euphoria») as Hanrahan (new character)
  • Ben Ahlers («Gilded Age») as Burton (new character)
  • Hattienne Park («Hannibal») as Elise Park (new character)
  • Robert John Burke («Law & Order: SVU») as Seth
  • Noah LaManna («Star Trek: Strange New Worlds») as Kat (Ellie’s ex-girlfriend)

The cast also includes:

  • Caitlin Dever (Abby)
  • Gabriel Luna (Tommy)
  • Isabela Merced (Dina)
  • Young Mazino (Jesse)
  • Ariela Barer (Mel)
  • Tati Gabrielle (Nora)
  • Spencer Lord (Owen)
  • Jeffrey Wright (Isaac)
  • Catherine O’Hara (Joel’s therapist)

Due to the scale of the plot of The Last of Us Part 2, the show may end in the third or fourth season, which was generally said before. This year’s audience will receive seven episodes — less than in the first season. The story will unfold five years after the season one finale, with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) living in Jackson. But their relative safety will not last long.

The sequel to the series will debut on April 13that almost coincides with the release of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for the PC. Not long before, Druckmann shared thoughts on The Last of Us 3, but they are not very encouraging. So far, the most is a realistic and ambitious game project by — Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
