The owner of Tesla reported that he crashed his Cybertruck into a pole after hitting a curb. The accident occurred while using Full Self-Driving, Tesla’s advanced driver assistance system, which, according to Elon Musk, will be operating unattended this year.
Jonathan Challenger, a software developer from Florida, shared the details of the incident on social network X. He said that he was driving using the Tesla Full Self-Driving v13.2.4 system. The car was moving along the right lane, which ended and merged with the left lane, but the car could not properly merge into the flow of cars in the left lane and crashed into the curb. This was despite the fact that the left lane was free at the time.
Jonathan Challenger said he did not have time to react in time to take control of the Cybertruck:
«The car failed to move out of the ending lane (there was no one to my left) and made no attempt to brake or swerve until it hit the curb».
The Cybertruck then collided with a light pole. Fortunately, the driver was not injured.
To be fair, the pole was in a rather unusual location, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that Tesla FSD failed to change lanes. And even if the system didn’t change lanes, it should have at least avoided a collision with the curb or pole by stopping in front of the obstacle.
Challenger shared this story as a kind of «public warning» to remind people to stay alert when using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system and not to relax:
«Obviously, this is a big mistake on my part. Do not repeat it. Be careful. It can happen. I follow Tesla and FSD quite closely and hadn’t heard of any V13 accidents before this one. It’s very easy to let your guard down now – don’t do it».
The accident was likely the first recorded accident involving the latest version of FSD v13, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk called «amazing» and an important step toward achieving «autonomous unattended driving» by the end of the year.
Musk and his supporters often share videos of FSD claiming that the technology is «on the verge of true self-driving», despite available data indicating that Tesla is still several years away from achieving this goal.
