Fired employee hacked Disney World menu: added swearing, changed prices and allergens

Now Disney knows that revenge is a dish served with peanuts.

Former Disney World employee Michael Scheuer accuse of deliberately changing information about allergens on restaurant menus. In particular, he allegedly labeled dishes containing peanuts as safe for people with allergies to this product.

Using passwords that remained valid after his dismissal, Scheuer gained access to a third-party application to create menus. In addition to changing the allergen information, he added obscenities, changed prices and fonts to wingdings. It was the strange fonts that drew the employees’ attention to the problem.

As a result of Scheuer’s actions, all the menus in the database became unusable, and the app used to create them was down for a week or two until the problem was resolved. Despite changing the passwords at Disney, Scheuer hacked into several FTP servers of the app’s developer to change the allergen data again. He also replaced the QR codes that were supposed to lead to the menu with links to a website calling for a boycott of Israel. Scheuer also tried to hack into Disney employees’ accounts about 8,000 times.

According to Disney, the altered menus were discovered before they were sent to restaurants.
