So far, Apple has not presented any foldable device that would retain its functionality after being bent. The company has been working on a foldable iPad Pro or MacBook with a huge 18.8-inch display for some time now, but has not yet released any finished models for users. According to a new leak, one of the first foldable iPad Pro or MacBooks may feature in-screen Face ID.
A Digital Chat Station insider on Weibo said that engineering prototypes of a foldable iPad Pro or MacBook are equipped with Face ID sensors built under the display. The device has an 18.8-inch screen with a «metal superstructured lens» that connects components for transmitting and receiving data from facial recognition sensors hidden under the screen. This is the first time that information about a possible under-screen Face ID in a foldable Apple device has been reported.
It is known that the company is working on a large foldable gadget that can be either an iPad or a MacBook. The device with an 18.8-inch display can run on both iPadOS and macOS, which suggests that Apple can create a new product category by combining key elements of both lines. Mark Gurman previously noted that folding iPad will be gigantic (up to 20 inches when expanded) and runs both iPadOS and macOS applications.
Earlier, analyst Ross Young reported that Apple is developing an 18.8-inch foldable device with an OLED display, which is expected to be released in 2027. Another analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, claims that Apple is working on two foldable devices with screen sizes of 18.8 and 20.2 inches, and mass production of displays from LG should begin in late 2025.
According to Bloomberg, Apple doesn’t want its foldable tablet to have a noticeable crease, and this is one of the main reasons for the delay in the product launch. The company aims to make the screen look like a solid sheet of glass, a task that other manufacturers have not yet been able to accomplish.
In addition to the large foldable device, Apple is also planning to release a foldable iPhone without a crease in the display, which is rumored to be available next year. However, this device is not likely to feature in-screen Face ID – the company may use Touch ID in the power button.
It is not yet known what Apple will decide in the final version, but the 18.8-inch foldable iPad Pro or MacBook looks like an extremely promising device.
Previously reported sources told that the foldable Apple iPhone will debut in 2026, and the iPhone 17 Air will get a «nice price».
