«Gladiator II» grossed a record $87 million at the international box office in its first weekend of release in 63 countries.
The sequel to the Oscar-winning film «Gladiator» from director Ridley Scott has made a strong start in the international box office. Deadline’s report writes that the film set a record for the most successful international launch of any film by a director and became Paramount’s best R-rated debut outside the United States.
Twenty-four years after the first installment, which won the «Oscar» for Best Picture, the sequel to the story topped the box office in all key markets. For example, the best performance was demonstrated in the UK, where the film grossed $11.4 million in 722 theaters. In France, the film brought in $10.3 million. In Spain, the film earned $5.6 million, in Australia — $4.9 million, and in Mexico — $4.7 million.
These figures were achieved before the film’s premiere in the US and China, scheduled for November 22.
«Gladiator II is noticeably inferior to its outstanding predecessor, which in principle did not need a sequel. But we must understand that this is an expected, obvious result, and their comparison is hardly appropriate, given the amount of time that has passed and how much cinema and the world has changed. But as a sequel released many years later, this is an absolutely viable movie», — wrote in his review, our author Denys Fedoruk.
«Venom: The last dance» from Sony has surpassed the international grosses of the previous installment of the franchise. Over the weekend, the film earned $17.3 million in 66 countries, bringing its total global gross to $436.1 million. «Venom» showed the best results in China ($90.3 million), Mexico ($18.8 million), and the UK ($15.3 million).
«Code name “Red”» starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans added $14.7 million to its international total in its second weekend. The total box office outside the US amounted to $50 million, and the global box office was — $84 million.
The animated film «Wild robot» from Universal and DreamWorks Animation has passed the $300 million mark in global grosses. Over the weekend, the film earned an additional $6 million, bringing its international total to $170.7 million.
