Goodbye, Gmail: Elon Musk plans to develop his own email service

Published by Ihor Panchenko

Elon Musk, known for his projects in the space industry and electric car manufacturing, is planning to enter the email market. The entrepreneur intends to create a Gmail competitor within his X platform.

Information about the new project emerged after an exchange of messages on the social network X (Twitter). The user suggested the idea of creating X Mail with username@x.com addresses, to which Musk replied: «Yes, it’s on the task list».

The entrepreneur first mentioned the possibility of launching a postal service back in February. Back then, he said commented a post by the company’s engineer about the timing of the X Mail launch with the word «Soon».

After acquiring Twitter, renamed X, the billionaire is actively expanding the platform’s functionality. The team has already launched a job search portal that competes with LinkedIn and integrated free chatbot Grok. Payment functions are expected to be implemented soon.

The new mail service is likely to have a radically simplified interface. Instead of the traditional correspondence format, users will receive messages in the form of a direct messenger. Developers will abandon the usual chains of correspondence and complex text formatting.

Despite the ambitious plans, it is unlikely that X Mail will be able to overtake Gmail. Google has a powerful ecosystem of services that are tightly integrated with each other. More than 1.8 billion active users choose Gmail because of its easy search, integration with Google Workspace, and reliable security features.

The specific timing of the X Mail launch is not yet known. It is possible that the announcement of the project is just Musk’s attempt to test the audience’s reaction to possible innovations.
