Google announces Android XR — an open OS for headsets and augmented reality glasses

Published by Andrii Rusanov

Google follows in Apple’s footsteps and introduces a separate Android XR operating system for extended reality headsets. Under this term, the company includes a combination of VR, MR, and AR.

Android XR is suitable for all types of devices, including headsets that offer video or transparent imaging, glasses without displays, and AR glasses with screens. The operating system was developed in collaboration with Samsung. Google emphasizes the connection of this market with AI development.

“Advancements in artificial intelligence make interacting with computers more natural and convenient. This tipping point allows new extended reality (XR) devices like headsets and glasses to understand your intentions and the environment around you, helping you accomplish tasks in entirely new ways”.

The company talks about paving the way for the development of a wide range of Android XR devices for partners such as Qualcomm, Lynx, Sony, and XREAL.

“Additionally, we continue to collaborate with Magic Leap on XR technology and future products featuring augmented reality and artificial intelligence”.

Android XR will initially be launched on headsets that “will change the way you view, work, and explore”. The first device with the OS under the codename Project Moohan, created by Samsung, will be available next year.

Google promises easy switching between full immersion in a virtual environment and staying in the real world. The Gemini Assistant will be able to communicate with the user about what they see. According to the announcement, the new OS will receive special versions of key applications. Meanwhile, apps “for phones and tablets” will also work on Android XR.

“We’re also reimagining some of your favorite Google apps for headsets. You can watch YouTube and Google TV on a virtual big screen or relive cherished memories with Google Photos in 3D. You’ll be able to explore the world anew with Google Maps, soaring over cities and landmarks in Immersive View. And in Chrome, multiple virtual screens will let you easily multitask. You can even use Circle to Search to quickly find information about anything in front of you with a simple gesture”.

Soon, Google will begin testing prototypes of glasses with Android XR in the real world with a small group of users. Android XR is created as an open unified platform for XR headsets and glasses. This means a wide variety of devices for users and expanded capabilities for manufacturers using familiar Android tools and frameworks. Google invites device manufacturers and content creators to collaborate on the new product. Interested parties can join the process on the Android developers’ blog, and learn more about Android XR on the dedicated website.
