The HDMI Forum has announced that it will unveil the new HDMI 2.2 standard specifications at CES 2025. This coincides with the planned unveiling of new AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards and is sparking quite the buzz.
In the HDMI Forum’s press release, the development of the next-generation standard with increased bandwidth was confirmed. Thanks to new cables and connectors, the bandwidth will be increased, which will lead to improved image quality. Here’s the official word about the new HDMI:
“New specifications, incorporating next-generation HDMI technology and increased bandwidth, will support a wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates, delivered by the new HDMI cable.”
Current HDMI 2.1 specifications support bandwidth up to 48 Gbps and support resolutions up to 10240 × 4320 with 120 Hz with DSC (Display Stream Compression). Increased bandwidth could allow for higher resolutions and refresh rates without the need for DSC.
The DisplayPort 2.1 standard already offers up to 80 Gbps (UHBR20), and it is expected that RTX 50 will support it. AMD has already implemented DisplayPort 2.1, with the current Radeon RX 7000 series supporting UHBR13.5, while the Radeon PRO series supports UHBR20. The recently released Intel Arc Battlemage graphics cards also support the UHBR13.5 standard. The HDMI Forum plans to release the new specifications on January 6, one day before the official start of CES 2025.
