In an unexpected collaboration, Intel and AMD created the «x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group (x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group), which includes CEOs of many related companies.

The advisory group aims to bring together industry leaders to shape the future of x86 and foster innovation through a more unified set of guidelines and interfaces. The initiative aims to increase interoperability, predictability, and consistency in x86 product offerings. To accomplish this, the group will invite collaboration from the x86 hardware and software community that will extend across all areas, including data centers, cloud infrastructure, client, edge, and embedded devices. Ultimately, this should «provide customers with advantages for further development».

«We are on the cusp of the most significant changes to the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades — with new levels of customization, interoperability, and scalability needed to meet current and future customer needs. We’re proud to support AMD and the founding members of this advisory group as we shape the future of computing, and we’re deeply grateful for the support of so many industry leaders,» said Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel.

«The creation of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group will ensure that the x86 architecture continues to evolve as the computing platform of choice for developers and customers alike. We’re excited to bring the industry together to set the direction for future architectural enhancements and continue the incredible success of x86 for decades to come,» said Lisa Su, chairman of AMD.

Expected results of the Group’s operations:

  • Increase customer choice and compatibility between hardware and software, improving the ability to take advantage of new state-of-the-art features
  • Simplify architectural principles to increase software consistency and standardize interfaces across x86 products from Intel and AMD.
  • Ensure greater and more efficient integration of new capabilities into operating systems, frameworks, and applications.

Among the founders «of the Advisory Group» — are the heads of Broadcom, Dell, Google Cloud, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo, Microsoft, Oracle, Red Hat, as well as Tim Sweeney from Epic Games and Linux founder Linus Torvalds.
