It seems that Denuvo has launched a large-scale PR campaign to improve its image among gamers after numerous complaints about their DRM protection.
Product manager Andreas Ullmann in interview Rock Paper Shotgun recognized the complexity of the situation:
«I’m a gamer myself, so I know what I’m talking about. It’s really hard for gamers to see the immediate benefit of a developer or publisher using our anti-piracy services. Our protection simply works, and pirates cannot play protected games — this, along with the lack of obvious benefits, creates a negative reputation».
According to new research, piracy can take away almost 20% of game revenue. Ullmann explains that publishers spend hundreds of millions on the development of AAA projects and are looking for «insurance» in the form of Denuvo. In his opinion, the success of a game affects the duration of support, the number of updates, and the likelihood of a sequel.
Regarding complaints about Denuvo’s impact on game performance, Ullmann confirmed the problems with Tekken 7. However, he emphasized that such cases are rare among 60–70 games that receive Denuvo protection every year.
The company has created a Discord channel to communicate with players, but due to the large number of negative comments, administrators are forced to close and open discussions regularly.
Meanwhile, even large publishers are refusing to use Denuvo services. Recently, EA announced that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be released without DRM protection, explaining that it was due to trust in the players.
