«It scares me»: actress Aloy comments Sony’s AI experiments

«Leak» Sony’s announcement about the AI version of Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn has caused a wave of discussion, and now voice actress Ashley Burch has commented on the situation.

The actress has been voicing Aloy since 2017, which means that the issue of replacing her voice with AI is particularly important to her. The leaked internal video appeared on YouTube, but was later removed. However, users managed to download the video — it contains without the participation of Ashley Burch, a new voice of the character is shown.

Guerilla Games, the studio that created Horizon, informed Burch in advance that it did not use her voice or face for the test, and that the technology itself is not part of the development of new games. However, the actress is seriously concerned about this situation, as the rights to Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West belong to Guerilla. Although for her, it’s not just about Horizon or her career.

« I feel worried about this art form. Game performance as an art form», — says Burch in TikTok.

She emphasized that AI has become one of the main reasons for the SAG-AFTRA strikeThis is an American union representing actors, announcers, journalists, singers, stuntmen, voice actors, and other media professionals, which has been going on since 2023. The union demands that the use of AI in the gaming industry be regulated and that actors consent to the creation of digital copies of themselves.

«We are currently on strike. SAG-AFTRA is on strike against video games because of AI. Because this technology exists, because we know that game companies want to use it, we’re asking for protections», — the actress explains.

The actress explained that the technology itself does not scare her. She understands that gaming companies always would like to use new technologies, but the problem is the lack of clear rules that would protect performers from unauthorized use of their images.

«I just imagine a video like this coming out that does have someone’s performance attached to it. That does have someone’s voice or face or movement. And the possibility that if we lose this fight, that person would have no recourse. They wouldn’t have any protections. Any way to fight back. And that possibility… it makes me so sad. It hurts my heart. It scares me», — Burch emphasizes.

Burch does not call for a boycott of Guerilla or Sony, but emphasizes that the industry is facing an important choice. For its part, Sony has not commented on the situation. But sources claim that this was only a test prototype, not something that is officially being developed for future games.

«I love this industry and this art form so much and I want there to be a new generation of actors. I want there to be so many more incredible game performances. I want to be able to continue, to do this job, and if we don’t win, then that future is really compromised», — Ashley Burch summarized.

Currently, video game developers are not ready to agree to the new rules demanded by the union. The situation with Horizon Zero Dawn shows that the issue of using AI in the gaming industry is becoming more acute. For example, EA is getting even tougher with its actors — the company forces voice actors to work on their upcoming firings. Also, Microsoft recently added «pepper» when it released Muse AI to be involved in game development.
