John Travolta and Nicolas Cage are set to star in the sequel to “Face/Off”. The film will be directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett.
The sequel was announced back in 2019, but at that time it was about a refreshed cast. Last year, Adam Wingard stated he would only shoot the film if the original actors returned. Recently, insider Daniel Richtman claimed that Nicolas Cage and John Travolta will return for the sequel. However, they are likely to play supporting roles. Reports suggest that the plot of “Face/Off 2” will focus around the grown-up children of Castor Troy (Cage) and Sean Archer (Travolta), who meet.
The original 1997 film largely relied on the chemistry between Travolta and Cage. It’s hard to imagine the film or its sequel with other actors. On the other hand, it’s been 27 years, raising the issue of the actors’ age. Recently, James Mangold lamented the failure of “Indiana Jones and the Relic of Fate” precisely because of Harrison Ford’s age: “Audiences don’t want to see a hero at that age.”
There’s also the issue of the plot. The “gimmick” of the original story is unlikely to work in the same way again, and creating something totally original with the same impact as the face-swapping trick seems like a tough task. It’s also interesting to see how Cage’s character will be handled, considering the finale of the original. However, Simon Barrett previously stated that he doesn’t believe in the real death of Castor Troy.
There are no details yet on when production of “Face/Off 2” will begin. Currently, John Travolta is mostly involved in low-budget films, and Nicolas Cage has a fairly relaxed schedule for 2025. So, it’s likely not too difficult for both actors to join the film soon. It’s also interesting to see if the original director John Woo will play any role in the movie.
