Google announced, which will change the names of two US geographical locations in the application Google Mapsaccording to President Donald Trump’s January 20 order.
As a result, the Gulf of Mexico will be displayed on Google Maps as «Gulf of Mexico», and Mount Denali will revert to its historical name «Mount McKinley» (the mountain was renamed Denali in 2015 by President Barack Obama as a sign of respect for the indigenous people of the region).
Google has clarified that the updated nomenclature will appear in the application after the update of the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS):
«We have a long-standing practice of applying name changes when they are updated in official government sources».
It is noted that the names of the above-mentioned objects will be completely changed only in the United States, while residents of Mexico will see the old name of the Gulf, and in other countries both will be displayed.
Apple has not yet provided information on whether the names will be changed in Apple Maps.
