«Kyivstar» will turn off 3G connection in several cities: why is it being done and where will it happen?

Mobile operator «Kyivstar» has announced the gradual shutdown of its 3G network in a number of Ukrainian cities. This is done to improve the operation of the 4G network.

The company notes that over the past 2 years it has tested the 2100 MHz radio frequency spectrum in 29 cities. The results showed that the speed and quality of 4G mobile Internet increased by an average of 40%.

«Therefore, in order to improve the 4G network in certain regions, the 3G network will be turned off», the operator said in a statement.

The 3G network will be turned off in the following settlements:

  • Lviv,
  • Lviv region,
  • Zhovkva,
  • Winemakers,
  • Bold.

In the Lviv region, the shutdown is scheduled for February 25, 2025, and in Smila — for January 28, 2025.

«Kyivstar» notes that the rejection of 3G technology is part of a multi-year project aimed at modernizing the telecommunications infrastructure. This step allows not only to improve the customer experience and speed up the mobile Internet, but also to prepare the network for the introduction of 5G by freeing up frequencies from outdated technologies.

«The trend of reusing 3G frequencies in favor of 4G has long been observed worldwide. In particular, 56% of European mobile operators have already abandoned 3G, and another 42% will do so by the end of 2025. In total, only 5% of Kyivstar’s subscriber base still uses 3G», «Kyivstar» reports.

The company also emphasized that even if users have not yet switched to 4G, they will be able to make calls, send SMS and use other services other than 3G after the 3G shutdown without any changes. The operator also reminds that if a subscriber’s SIM card does not support 4G, it can be replaced with a USIM at no extra charge, and the number is retained. This can be done in «Kyivstar» stores or by ordering a USIM from «Ukrposhta» with free delivery.
