Lenovo is preparing a double blow: Legion Go with OLED and Legion Go S on SteamOS – Steam Deck competitors are coming

Published by Vadym Karpus

Famed insider Evan Blass has unveiled details about the unannounced portable gaming PC Lenovo Legion Go S with an extremely interesting feature – a Steam button. This suggests that this console might be the first portable device from a third-party manufacturer based on SteamOS, thus potentially the first real competitor to the Steam Deck.

But this portable gaming PC is obviously not alone. Blass also shared an image of a new, larger device, the Lenovo Legion Go. This larger portable Legion Go PC retains the detachable gamepads similar to Joy-Con, and a stand, which were the most distinctive features of the original. The “FPS mode” is also preserved, where you can set one of these controllers on a disk-like stand and use it as a vertical mouse.

Another interesting update, the IPS LCD will be replaced by an OLED panel of the same 8.8-inch size. This is evident from the original file names of the images. This should provide improved colors and deeper black levels, as well as potentially improved response time.

The base of this portable gaming device is likely to be the AMD Z2 Extreme processor. However, details about the specs of the new version of the Legion Go, such as system configuration and battery capacity, are still missing.

The new images do not feature a Steam button. So, it’s quite possible that Lenovo is still hedging with Windows in addition to SteamOS. Two versions of the console based on different platforms might hit the market. Likely, the smaller Lenovo Legion Go S will be a portable device based on SteamOS under the Powered by SteamOS branding. Valve defines Powered by SteamOS as “hardware running the SteamOS operating system, implemented in close cooperation with Valve.”
