OpenAI is working on its own social network with a Twitter-like feed, and an early version of the platform is already available.
According to sources familiar with the project, the social network will play a key role in creating images through ChatGPT. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has already received informal feedback on the idea from outsiders. It is still unclear whether this network will become a separate application or will be embedded in ChatGPT —. A spokesperson for OpenAI has not yet commented.
And if this social network does come out, the competition in the industry will become even more intense. Altman and Musk have been clashing in the AI race for a long time — now the fight for social media may be added to it. In February, Musk tried to buy out OpenAI for $97.4 billion. At the time, Altman said joked that he could be bought by X (Twitter) for $9.74 billion.
Another major player — Meta — is not standing aside either. According to the sources, the company plans to add a social feed to a separate app of its AI assistant, which it is actively working on. When rumors first surfaced, Altman hinted at his own social network.
One of the motives of the social network is not just influence or hype, but also access to new types of data for model training. Unlike OpenAI, X (via Grok) and Meta already have direct access to real, fresh user content. This is exactly what is needed to create a more adaptive AI Grok integration with X makes competitors jealous, according to sources from another AI lab because the content there quickly goes viral.
Whether we will ever see the release of this social network is a big question. However, it shows that OpenAI is actively looking for ways to scale — and it is not only about models, but also about its own ecosystem around them. Meanwhile, it’s hard not to see the company’s success — ChatGPT reaches 20 million paid users. Developers have started to release different models more often, such as special AI models for IT professionals or improved image generation that allows you to create realistic images. For example, now ChatGPT creates incredibly realistic fake checks.
