Major update to Windows Photos ─ Copilot, search for recognized text, new formats and tools

Published by Vadym Karpus

Microsoft has released a major update to Windows Photos for Windows Insider program members. Users of Windows 10 and 11 test versions can now try out new features, including OCR web search, improved context menus, support for nested folders, a dedicated Copilot button, support for JXL format, and other improvements.

Earlier this year, Microsoft added OCR capabilities to the Photos app in Windows 10 and 11. With the current update, you can highlight recognized text in an image and click Search in Web to get more information.

The developers have also improved the program’s context menu. If you right-click on an image in Windows Explorer, Windows 11 will present you with a new submenu that contains additional features such as Edit with Photos, Erase Objects with Photos, Create with Designer, and Visual Search with Bing. This change will make it easier for users to find additional features in the Photos app and launch them much faster.

Windows Photos now lets you hide or show subfolders and their contents in the gallery for a more complete and easy-to-navigate experience. In addition, the toolbar has a dedicated Copilot button for sharing images with artificial intelligence to get photo editing tips, image analysis, and framing suggestions.

In addition, the program received two more improvements. Back by popular demand, Photos now supports JPEG XL (JXL) files. And the performance and quality of the Image Creator and Restyle Image functions on Copilot+ PCs have been improved. Image Creator now loads correctly the first time Photos is launched, and you can save generated images under different names.

All of these changes and improvements are available to participants in the testing program with Windows Photos version 2025.11030.20006.0 and later. However, the update is being rolled out gradually, so not all users will receive it at the same time.

Microsoft recently announced released mandatory Windows 10 update with installation failures and bugs.
