Meta adds «live» offline translation to Ray-Ban smartphones

Published by Vadym Karpus

Meta has announced an update to its Ray-Ban smart glasses. First, as part of the cosmetic update, users are now offered new lens color combinations. Secondly, all users now have access to some features that were previously limited to members of the Meta Early Access program. Thirdly, the company shared information about the upcoming expansion of features. The new features include live translation, sending messages, making calls via Instagram, and interaction with Meta AI based on what the user sees in front of them.

The live translation feature was first announced at Meta Connect 2024 in October last year, and in December it was launched in selected countries for Meta Early Access members. Now this feature is available in all regions where Ray-Ban Meta glasses are sold. It allows you to have a conversation with someone who speaks English, French, Italian, or Spanish and hear a real-time translation in your native language right through your glasses.

If you download a language pack in advance, translation will work even without a Wi-Fi or mobile Internet connection. This can be especially useful when traveling.

Also, new lens color combinations are now available for the Ray-Ban Meta Skyler frame model:

  • Shining chalky gray with Sapphire Transitions photochromic lenses,
  • Shiny black with clear or green tinted lenses.

Meta also announced several features that will soon be available to a wider audience. In particular, the Live AI feature, which allows Meta AI to constantly «see» what you are doing to have more natural conversations. This feature will be available to users in the US and Canada.

In addition, the ability to send and receive direct messages, photos, and make audio and video calls via Instagram will also be available in the near future.

Access to music services such as Spotify, Amazon Music, Shazam, and Apple Music is beginning to expand beyond the US and Canada. At the same time, only those who have English as their primary language will be able to ask Meta AI to turn on music or provide information about what you are listening to.

This month, Meta AI was launched in the UK, and next week it will be available in all supported EU countries.

The company additionally plans to launch Ray-Ban smart glasses in Mexico, India, and the UAE, but has not yet announced the exact dates.

Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses are also used in Ukraine. Recently, a cheater driver from Lviv tried to use glasses to pass the driving test.
