Meta Platforms is working on a search engine based on artificial intelligence to reduce dependence on Google and Bing. About reports The Information, citing a person involved in the development of the strategy.

According to the source, a web crawlerA web crawler is software or a bot that systematically crawls web pages on the Internet to collect and index information. Meta will provide in-depth answers to users’ questions about current events in the Meta AI chatbot available on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Currently, the company relies on Google and Bing search engines to provide users with information about news, stocks, and sporting events.

The AI-powered search engine segment is developing rapidly, with OpenAI (creator of ChatGPT), Google, and Microsoft competing for dominance in this market. Google is actively integrating its most powerful AI model Gemini into its main products, including search. OpenAI uses its largest investor Microsoft’s Bing search engine to answer popular queries.

However, the collection of web data to train AI models and search engines raises concerns about copyright infringement and fair compensation for content creators. Last week, Meta announced said that its chatbot will use Reuters content to answer users’ questions about news and current events in real time.
