Users have noticed that Microsoft is working on a program to easily transfer data in Windows 11 from an old PC to a new one.
The Migration program is part of the Windows backup system, not a separate application. The «Enhanced» version can resolve the OneDrive cloud storage issue when a data transfer exceeds the storage quota allocated to the account.
User Dongle shows how the Migration interface might look like, with the phrases: «Backup to this PC» and «Transfer files to a new PC». The first option duplicates the functions of the standard Windows 11 backup, and the second allows you to copy files to another device without using flash drives or other physical media. Similar functions have long existed on iOS and Android: Apple allows you to transfer all your data to a new iPhone via iCloud or wireless copying, and Google offers a similar option for Android.
Both computers must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. They will probably use the Nearby Sharing technology that Windows already has. You’ll be prompted if you want to start the file transfer, and you’ll receive a special code.
It is advisable to connect the devices to power, as the process can take a long time. Also, Migration will have limitations for data transfer, especially for large files, and you can’t manually select folders and files to move yet.
The Windows backup program already knows how to migrate documents, images, etc., but not installed programs. This is the biggest problem after getting a new PC or reinstalling Windows, when you have to manually download and configure everything. It’s not yet clear what kind of files Migration can transfer and what problems to expect with third-party programs.
Microsoft has worked on file migration before, for example, in the beta build a new feature allows you to «drop» files into different programs by simply dragging them to the top of the screen. Another Windows 11 update significantly speeds up file copying, but not without nuances on the part of the operating system.
