Microsoft plans to close Skype in Mayso anyone who hasn’t used their Skype subscriptions or credit yet should do so by the deadline.
However, it is extremely difficult to get a refund for unused funds. At least that’s what one Skype user claims. He stated that Microsoft requires him to write a physical letter to the company to submit a request. The user shared his experience on Reddit
According to him, he had renewed his Skype number subscription earlier this year — before Microsoft announced that it was discontinuing the service. After that, he wanted to get a refund for his subscription, so he contacted Microsoft support. The customer service representatives were professional and polite, but as it turned out, they were completely powerless in this matter.
Microsoft has confirmed that after May, basic Skype features such as Caller ID, SMS, and call forwarding will disappear. It will be possible to make calls only through the web version of Skype or through the Teams Free service. But without Caller ID, without a clear timeline, and without guarantees that it will work in the future.
The user also noted that Microsoft refused to issue a refund because the request for a refund was not submitted within 14 days of purchase. Moreover, the company stated that there was no other way to get a refund.
«When I asked to escalate my request to a higher level, I was told that there was no such process. No email, no department, no official communication channel at all.»
According to the user, Microsoft suggested that the only way to file a complaint was to send a physical letter to the company’s office in Reading, UK.
«What is their advice? If I want to complain, I need to send a paper letter to Microsoft.»
According to official support for SkypeA refund is possible in the following cases:
You can find more information about the refund process on the official Microsoft support website. However, as the company itself emphasizes, in the EU, refunds are made only at Skype’s discretion. This means that the chance of getting your money back is very low.
