In the press release, the Pantone Color Institute writes that this shade of brown “nourishes us with the sublime qualities of chocolate and coffee, providing a sense of comfort.”
“The Pantone ‘Color of the Year’ program was initiated as a way to engage consumers with how what is happening in the world is expressed through the quiet language of colors,” Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, told TIME.

To select the color, a global team explored new technologies, social values, art collections, tourist destinations, and assessed the overall mood or sentiment felt by designers and consumers throughout the year.
Mocha mousse is essentially an evolution of last year’s color of the year, Peach Fuzz, which reflected the need for comfort and coziness, while the new color, according to Pantone, provides all of this.
