Google has announced that starting next week, Google Photos will have a new icon that will indicate when a photo has been edited using artificial intelligence. In addition, the service will also show when an image consists of several different photos.
According to blog According to John Fisher, Director of Engineering at Google Photos, photos edited with tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Enhance already contain metadata based on technical standards from the International Press and Telecommunications Council (IPTC). This data shows that the photo was edited using generative AI. Now this information will be visible alongside other data, such as file name, location, and backup status.
The AI info section will be available in the image details in Google Photos, both on the web and in the app. The labels won’t be limited to generative AI. Google will also indicate when a photo contains elements from multiple different images, such as when you use the Best Take and Add Me features on Pixel.
Fischer noted that this work is not yet complete and the company will continue to collect feedback and evaluate additional solutions to add more transparency to AI edits. Until now, the metadata attached to Google’s AI tools has been virtually invisible to end users.
As a reminder, Youtube has also started the fight against dipshits. Last month, the platform announced new tools for copyright protection.
