The first season of “Squid Game” became the most popular show in Netflix history, and now the streaming service has released the much-awaited sequel. Starting today, 7 episodes of the second season are available for viewing (two fewer than in the first) — in Ukrainian dubbing.
The second season of “Squid Game” will focus on the character Lee Jung Jae — Seong Gi Hun, who won the previous competitions, but now plans to return to the deadly arena to save new participants and seek revenge on the organizers. Despite the main character’s efforts, judging from previous trailers, there seems to be plenty of blood and death.
“Three years after winning the ‘Squid Game,’ player 456 rejects the idea of moving to the USA and returns with a new purpose. Gi Hun joins the mysterious survival game again along with new participants, aiming to win 45.6 billion won,” — from the official synopsis.
Besides Jae, other returning actors in the sequel include Lee Byung Hun (the game’s frontman), Wi Ha Joon (the young police officer looking for his brother), and Gong Yoo (the recruiter of new players). The second season continues the main storyline of the first but with a new cast of players and some new rules: participants will have the right to vote to end the competitions after each contest and leave with the amount they have accumulated by that time if the majority votes “yes.”
Viewers can also expect new games, some of which will be familiar not only to Koreans but to the whole world (for instance, one of the teasers featured “tic-tac-toe”). Interestingly, this time the participants will be younger, and to add more drama to the character lineup, a pregnant woman and a man who suddenly encounters his own mother in the competition have been included.
The series was directed by Hwang Dong Hyuk, who previously mentioned that he lost “8-9 teeth” due to stress from filming the first season and agreed to the second season “only for the money”. At the same time, he has announced a third season, which will be the finale of the story (and for which “editing of episodes has already been completed”).
The first season of “Squid Game” became the most popular series in Netflix history and won six Emmy Awards (with Lee winning for best lead actor in particular). Also, the streaming service released a themed reality show, where 456 real players competed for a $4.56 million prize (the reality show racked up 20.5 million views in its first week).
