Remember first reactions to «Snow White» from journalists? Forget it. It seems that the ratings on review aggregator sites have put everything in its place again.
Despite the fact that the film’s premiere caused a flood of favorable comments on social media for Disney’s latest work, the overall score was far from ideal. On Rotten Tomatoes, for example, the consensus of critics did not exceed a modest 48% based on nearly 100 professional reviews.
Now the movie, which was initially described as «the biggest surprise of 2025», is being called mediocre, the visuals — unconvincing, and the storytelling — confusing.
Interestingly, the only reviews that remained unchanged — were for Rachel Zegler’s performance. She is still praised, calling «charming and one of the best elements of the movie».
«While Zegler shines as the title character, the rest of the performances range from mediocre to terrible. No magic spell can erase the unconvincing visuals and other mistakes of this money-wasting movie,», — writes Carla Hay of CultureMixOnline.
Tayler Thain of Discussing Film notes that there is nothing to enjoy in this «poorly conceived and cynical remake» other than Rachel Zegler’s performance, adding that «even Gal Gadot’s ridiculously bad lines are not worth the trip to the cinema». Johnny Oleksinski of New York Post has a similar opinion to his colleague:
«A timeless classic and groundbreaking achievement in animation turned into a silly and clumsy version that disappears from your mind as soon as you finish watching».
So why were the reactions and the actual assessment so different? It’s hard to say without accusing Disney of trying to stave off disaster with influence and money. There were rumors that the studio had already resigned itself to a potential failure after the initial hype of the new «Snow White», but given that opening forecasts still give the film great box office numbers, perhaps Disney finally decided that things were not so hopeless and resorted to a few tricks.
