NVIDIA B300 video chips will get a socket instead of soldering on the board, — insiders

Published by Andrii Rusanov

According to unofficial sources, future NVIDIA B300 GPUs will have their own socket instead of soldering on the boards. At least for server versions.

The change in hardware implementation was reported by Trendforce, referring to Chinese sites MoneyDJ and Economic Daily News that appeal to suppliers. Industry sources say that NVIDIA will switch from an OAM (out-of-the-box) to a socket layout starting with the GB300 product line.

After the second half of 2025, the B300 series is likely to become the mainstream product for NVIDIA. The design change is expected to improve performance and simplify chip and board maintenance. The design will improve scalability and facilitate system upgrades. The new design also provides more flexibility to manufacture individual components instead of a complex circuit.

This is the first time NVIDIA has introduced a socket for its chips. However, this is not the first example of the design in the industry — AMD introduced the socket in 2023 for its MI300A AI processors.

For now, we are talking only about processors for artificial intelligence servers however, there is no mention of discrete chips for video cards or laptops. Commentators on the Internet consider this step to be logical and ask why, in fact, there have been no sockets for GPUs or memory for them until now.
